MECA Has Arrived
For 50 years, Manitoba sloped roofers have been doing something special, something abnormal to anywhere else in Canada or the US. We have had a stand alone residentially focus shingling and sloped roofing association. Sloped roofing is a smaller industry than flat roofing and most companies specialize in one or the other. One is focused primarily on commercial contracts, the other on residential. The project sizes are vastly different, and the customers. Most provincial or state roofing associations are oriented toward flat roofing, with sloped being a tag-a-long. Both trades are very important because all building require a roofing system to keep the water out, especially important in this climate.
In Manitoba, this started in 1975 as the Shingling Contractors Association (MSCA), which changed its name to the Sloped Roofing Association (MSRA) once that had been established as the trade name. The purpose was always to connect contractors and suppliers that were committed to the industry and enable discussion around issues the industry was facing. There have been some noteworthy successes along the way with establishing the provincial apprenticeship program, good roofing practices, and safety advocacy with government. This organization was largely volunteer run and at times struggled because of that but continued to recognize the great need for improvement in the industry and lots of work to do, so never gave up. Coming out of the pandemic a new vision has emerged that is much bigger, includes staff, and is more driven then ever to create change.
Which is why we are excited to introduce MECA to the province. The Manitoba Exterior Contractors Association is open to new trades that have been underrepresented in this province but share similar industry challenges. Largely these contractors are working at heights and are working on residential homes or building with residential construction methods. Often these companies are dealing directly with homeowners to do business and exterior contractor often perform multiple disciplines within the banner of “exteriors”. Sloped roofing, siding, stucco, eavestrough, soffit/fascia, and metal roofing and siding systems.
If you are a contractor, then we want to invite you to take part.
Trade associations serve a multitude of purposes within a State or Province. Firstly, they provide a unified voice for their members, advocating for industry-specific issues and influencing policy decisions that impact their trade. This collective representation can lead to better regulations, improved standards, and beneficial legislation. This is especially important right now with the challenges the industry is facing with compliance to the provincial Acts and Regulations for safety. There is great need for collaborative discourse.
Furthermore, trade associations offer networking opportunities, allowing professionals to share knowledge, best practices, and innovations. We can organize meetings, workshops, and training sessions that help members stay current with industry trends and advancements.
Education and certification programs are another vital function of trade associations. By setting standards and providing the necessary training, they ensure that members are well-equipped with the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality services. This not only enhances the reputation of the trade but also builds customer trust.
By fostering a sense of community, trade associations also enhance collaboration and problem-solving among members. They create a platform where issues can be discussed, and collective solutions can be developed, benefiting the entire industry.
Lastly, trade associations often provide valuable resources such as industry research, market data, and technical support, helping members to make informed business decisions and remain competitive in their field.
In Manitoba, there have been many other trades that have organized and improved their industry. This work creates a better environment for everyone; the contractors, consumers, suppliers, manufacturers, Workplace Health and Safety, Workers Compensation Board, and others.
